DIG traffic criticised the city government for banning public transport on I. I. Chundrigar Road and allowing private cars, saying that such a restriction was not imposed anywhere in the world. “In every big city of the world, private cars are banned in the downtown areas and public transport is allowed, but the city government has done the things otherwise,” he commented.
He also expressed his concern over the failure of city government in shifting illegal intercity bus termini to the city’s outskirts. According to him, lack of parking places in the downtown is one of the biggest reasons for traffic congestion. Besides, engineering faults at many spots constitute another major reason for both traffic congestion and traffic accidents. “It is the responsibility of the city government to make corrections wherever required. There are 26 defected light signals that need to be repaired while another 29 signals have to be installed,” he mentioned.
Wajid Durrani also blamed town officers and local police for assuming stakes in encroachments that hinder the flow of vehicular traffic and cause traffic jams. He mentioned that there were 34 points where encroachments had been causing serious traffic problems.
Admitting the allegations on traffic police, the DIG said: “In many cases people force them (cops) to accept bribe and in case of encroachment the respective town with the help of Thana police should remove the same”. He said that he has taken action against the contract system, previously run by some section officers, by suspending some of them and blacklisting others. He further said that he would now take action against token system as he was already working on it. |
