| Musharraf advised to seek election from present parliament |

The previous presidential election was not fair, and President Pervez Musharraf should resign first and then contest fresh elections from the present assemblies. These elections could possibly be held in July, former sindh Assembly speaker (and well-known politician) Hussain A. Haroon said on Wednesday during a press conference at his residence. Haroon said that the previous presidential election was held on the basis of the 2002 “rigged” elections, while the people have given their verdict against Pervez Musharraf in the 2008 general elections. Haroon, a close friend of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chief Asif Zardari, advised Musharraf to contest the election from present assemblies if he wanted to become president again. He cautioned that there was the possibility of a civil war which might lead towards breaking point if Musharraf did not resign. Haroon warned that the country could not survive if the present political trend persisted. He appreciated the legal fraternity’s movement, and said that the lawyers had created awareness among the masses who gave their verdict in the February election. Haroon has been offered an important position as Pakistan’s permanent envoy in UN. He said that the present price hike was the worst ever, and had made the lives of the poor people miserable. Moreover, he said, the energy crisis was the main cause behind the price spiral and the government must tackle this issue urgently. A reduction in oil and gas prices would help reduce prices, Haroon said, adding that that the government and private oil companies earned Rs120 million during the last years through surcharges. These companies have now set a surcharge target of Rs313 million. He demanded that taxes be reduced on oil. |
