Nine killed on fourth day of violence
Tuesday, 02 February 2010

Nine persons were killed on Monday, the fourth consecutive day of violence that has gripped many parts of the city. Much of the fighting occurred in Nazimabad and Orangi Town, but despite more than 25 men being killed over the four days, the police failed to arrest any perpetrator on Monday either.

The police said that on late Monday night, unidentified armed men riding on motorcycles stationed themselves on the Nazimabad No 7 bridge, and opened indiscriminate fire on Mujahid Colony. Five men were killed in this attempt, including Nazeer Khan, Meer Daad, Zubair Khan, Zahir Khan and one unknown, while several others are said to be injured. Two men were killed in the jurisdiction of the North Nazimabad police station; their bodies, however, fell into the other side of the ‘border’ into the jurisdiction of the adjoining North Karachi police.

After the killing of the five men in Mujahid Colony, residents of the area blocked the main road in protest, and pelted passing vehicles with stones. Some unidentified persons also resorted to aerial firing.

In another set of events, unidentified armed men opened fire near the office of the Metric Board on Monday morning, killing a man named Rizwan, son of Kamil. This sparked more violence in North Nazimabad; however, a heavy contingent of the police reached the spot, and tried to control the situation.

The police further said that on Monday morning, a few labourers who had been stranded in Orangi Town due to lack of transport, started walking back towards their houses via Qasba Morr, when some miscreants carrying sticks and rods attacked them. Several men were injured in the incident, but only Humair, Danish, and Sohail could be identified.

Moreover, armed men also resorted to firing in Bara Board area, Pak Colony, injuring two men, Abdul Rehman and Farhan. Meanwhile, a man named Naseem sustained bullet injuries in North Nazimabad.

Armed men also resorted to firing in Qasba Morr, police said, killing an unidentified 25-year-old man. More violence ensued in Qasba Colony, Banaras and Manghopir, as armed men resorted to aerial firing, which is reported to have continued for hours. During the spate of violence, a car and a motorcycle were torched near Qasba Morr, while two persons, Naseeb Khan and Shoaib, sustained injuries.

A man named Khyber Khan was brought to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital in an injured state, hospital sources said, but he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Meanwhile, Inayat-ur-Rehman was shot dead by armed men in Nazimabad No 2. Till the filing of this report the situation was tense in the above-noted localities.
