Air Marshal (retd) Nur Khan, hero of the 1965 war, has demanded a reduction in the defence budget as “the armed forces of Pakistan are living beyond their means.” This was stated by him at a joint press conference with the Chairman of Tehrik-e-Istaqlal Air Marshal (retd) Asghar Khan at the Karachi Press Club on Saturday. Nur Khan claimed that if the forces did not change their lifestyle then in future the officers will not even be able to get their salaries. He said Pakistan required a conventional army and the three forces should themselves decide their size. “We should use our nuclear capability as shield to deter India from attacking Pakistan.” He said that he had no assessment about the Pakistan Army but the Air Force and Navy are not in a position to carry on war even for very short period. He termed the job done by the Pakistani scientists as remarkable and said after the Indian nuclear tests it had become inevitable for Pakistan to conduct the tests. Nur Khan, while criticising the government’s policies, asked as how the inflow of foreign investment can be expected when PIA, Pakistan Steel Mill, Pakistan Railways and other reputed organisations are facing bankruptcy. Asghar Khan, while endorsing the views of Nur Khan, demanded that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should provide the Income Tax Assessment of the last 10 years. He also demanded that Nawaz Sharif should not operate industries while he is the prime minister, as the policy makers will introduce policies favourable to his industry. |
