Trade unions headed by the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) will be contesting against each other in the Pakistan Steel (PS) referendum on Thursday for the election of the Collective Bargaining Authority (CBA). The referendum is being held after 12 years owing to a ban on trade union activities in the country. The PPP’s People’s Workers Union (PWU) and the MQM’s United Workers Front (UWF) will be the main contestants in the PS election. PPP Karachi chief, Faisal Abidi, and Deputy Speaker Shehla Raza announced on Tuesday that the government would reinstate every one of the thousands of employees who were dismissed from the PS. Contractual employees will also be regularised. At a press conference organised at the Karachi Press Club (KPC), Abidi and Raza declared that corruption at Pakistan Steel would be made public and authorities involved in corruption would be punished. PWU President Shamshad Qureshi announced that the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N)-led Staff and Workers League, the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI)-led Pakistan Steel Labour Union, the Labour League of Pakistan Steel, the Pakhtoon Labour Federation and the Tehreek-e-Minhajul Qura’an have extended support to PWU in the referendum. He said the union would work for the protection and expansion of Pakistan Steel as well as for the betterment of its employees, adding that they plan to introduce a pension scheme, a five-year promotion policy, full medical facilities, and a “son’s quota.” |
