More than 10 million consumers of Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) were forced to undergo 16-hour-long power shutdown when tripping of Water and Power Development Autority (WAPDA)’s two KDA-Jamshoro extra high-tension transmission lines led to closure of all the KESC and IPPs power-generating units in the city at about 2.00 am on Tuesday. Water closure, which was introduced by the KWSB on September 7 for joining the old system with the new K-II system, was scheduled to be done away with on September 14. But it was further delayed for about 24 hours as none of the pumping stations could function till 9.00 pm on Tuesday. According to a KWSB spokesman, 130 mgd gallon could not be injected into the pipeline network on Tuesday. The shutdown on Tuesday was a major breakdown and, according to experts, the city would continue to feel its backwash effects during the next 48 hours. The power crisis, which hit the city, also affected major public hospitals. Several operations could not be performed in the city’s major public hospitals, where persistent water scarcity further added to the misery of the patients. Surgeons at the JPMC postponed at least 20 operations. At Lyari General Hospital, over 25 operations were postponed and only few doctors attended their assigned out-patient duties. However, no untoward incident was reported. Braving 39oC temperatures without electricity, all indoor patients were in miserable condition. |
