An exhibition of photographs by the students of Indus Valley School of Arts and Architecture (IVSAA) opened at the Commune Artists Colony on Tuesday.

‘Eye of the Amateur’ — the exhibition features 65 photographs and one documentary made by the students of photography. The show does not highlight any specific theme apart from the techniques used by the 13 artists.

Students were taught eight techniques to create special effects in photographs without any computer or technological aid and all of the featured photographs were shot on standard film based camera while all effects were created using the techniques.

Ahmed Sharjee Aijazi, a third year student whose five photographs were on display, said that “we were taught these techniques in the Film and Print Making class and the work of some of us was such that our teachers Farah Mehboob and Yousuf Bashir suggested that we exhibit our best works.”

The different techniques taught and displayed included cross processing, zoomart, slide sandwiching, silhouetting, light painting, shutter speed among others.

Ahmed Aleem, another student whose work was on display said that the exhibition was organised by the students themselves to promote new thought in Pakistani photography.

Anum Khan, who made the documentary about how our Madrassas are not a breeding ground for terrorists said that the usual rhetoric we hear on media – local and foreign is based on a few Madrassas out of a total of 20,000 Madrassas in Pakistan. She adds that her seven minute documentary is a step to counter those allegations.

The documentary features interviews of HEC officers, some local Madrassas where conventional education is taught in tandem with religious education. The film reveals how these Madrassas are a way out for the poor people who can send their children here and not be worried about their child’s lodging, education, health food, which is all provided by these Madrassas for little cost.

Amin J, a visitor at the exhibition said that it is good for the students to exhibit their work like this as it educates the public about modern photography and encourages the students.

Ali Hasan another visitor said despite the fact that he is ignorant of the technicalities of art, the exhibits appealed to him visually.
