The Provincial Ombudsman has sought a report from the Provincial Transport Secretary, regarding the unfair increase in public transport fares and the non-implementation of Motor Vehicle Ordinance (MVO) 1969. The action was taken on a petition filed by Pasban Karachi President Ashraf Hussain and Pasban Public Issues Committee Director Abu Bakar Usman, according to a Pasban press release issued Monday. In the petition, Hussain and Usman had said that the Provincial Transport Department had bypassed the Sindh Assembly and proposals submitted by the citizens, and raised transport fares unilaterally and illegally. They had further said that the ratio of road mishaps had increased due to the non-implementation of the MVO. The Pasban leaders also told the Provincial Ombudsman that in light of the price of petrol, the operational cost of the transporters was just Rs2.20 per passenger per trip but they were charging Rs11 to Rs17 per passenger per trip and were getting huge undue profits. The Pasban leaders demanded in the petition that transporters be ordered to charge children under 12 half fare and drivers and conductors of the buses should wear uniforms, besides displaying an RTA card, according to various Articles of the MVO 1969. They also suggested that the government should immediately clamp a ban on smoke-emitting vehicles, adding that transporters should be ordered to issue tickets to passengers, besides respecting female passengers. Provincial Ombudsman-II Director Abu Ahmed Akif has sought a complete report from the Provincial Transport Secretary in this regard by September 20. |
