The government is taking appropriate steps to phase out noise creating and smoke-emitting vehicles to control pollution in the city, the provincial law officer told the Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday. The court was hearing a petition of lawyer Islamuddin against smoke-emitting and noise-creating vehicles and illegal bus terminals in the city. Provincial law officer Sarwar Khan apprised the SHC’s division bench comprising Justice Munib Ahmed Khan and Justice Dr Rana Mohammad Shamim that the government was making efforts to convert two-stroke rickshaws into four-stroke ones and some practical measures have been taken to bring four-stroke rickshaws on roads. In this regard, he said, the ministry of transport took up the matter with the federal government for funds. He assured the court that the entire situation will improve within some months. Regarding phasing out two-stroke rickshaws, he said that calculated steps were being taken to overcome the environmental pollution. The CDGK’s counsel Manzoor Ahmed said that the CDGK also has taken measures to remove terminals of inter-city buses while Saddar and other terminals were still to be removed. The petitioner contended that despite issuance of several directions to the traffic police regarding smoke-emitting vehicles, no compliance was carried out and still defective rickshaws, smoke-emitting buses and coaches were plying on roads. The Sindh government, however, extended the cut off date for the removal of two stroke-rickshaws till June 2010. The hearing was adjourned for two months. Meanwhile, the SHC restrained the police from taking coercive action against a couple who have been declared as Karo-Kari. The court was hearing a petition filed by Sumaira who had moved the court for the quashment of an FIR against her spouse. The petitioner, who, after changing her religion, married Taj Mohammad in August 2008 with her free will, said that her family members were antagonistic to the marriage. They had therefore registered a case of her kidnapping at the Gumbat police station, Khaipur, she said. |
