Sindh govt to cancel factory trawler licences
Saturday, 14 June 2008
Sindh government will approach the federal government to cancel licenses given to the deep sea factory trawlers which have resulted in the depletion of fish stocks.

Meanwhile, Sindh Fisheries Minister, Zahid Ali Bhurgari while addressing the gathering of the fishermen at the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) secretariat in the fishermen locality, Ibrahim Hyderi on Friday assured the fishing community to resolve the issues faced by the marine and inland fishermen in the province.

He said that the trawlers will not be allowed to operate near the seashore and effective steps will be taken to control the marine pollution.

A large number of foreign factory trawlers are operating near the seashore, depriving the local fishermen of their catch. The increasing marine pollution and the use of harmful fishing nets have affected the community, as fish reserves are depleting rapidly, creating unemployment in the coastal localities.

Bhurgari said he has taken an active part in the struggle launched by the fishermen along with the PFF while the PPP was in opposition. He said that now when he has been given the portfolio of the Fisheries in the provincial cabinet he is bound to resolve the issues of the marginalised fishermen community on a priority basis.

The minister was accompanied by the PPP Karachi leaders and officials of the Fisheries department. He lauded the role of the PFF for protecting the rights of the fishermen community and assured them of the government support to resolve their issues.

He said that the PPP will not betray the common people and the ministry will take steps to end the contractual system, replacing it with a license system at all the 1260 inland water bodies in the province.

Earlier, PFF leaders, Mohammed Ali Shah, Saeed Baloch, Sami Memon, Akhtar Shaikh, Ayoub Shan and others received the minister at the secretariat.

In his briefing the PFF representative said that the fishing sector is contributing to a major share in the national exchequer but in return the government authorities remain indifferent towards the issues faced by the fishermen.

The PFF leaders vowed to continue their struggle if the present PPP government will ignore the community. On this the minister declared that they are designing plans for the well being of the fishermen all over the province. He added that he wants to visit all the major water bodies to deal with the community problems.

Later the minister visited the high tide affected areas in Rehri, Dabla, and other localities along with the local fishermen activists.
