Once there was intense hot weather in Madinah. The angry sun was radiating intense heat. Men, women, children all were crying for intense sunshine. Every one was worried. It was the first time that the people of Madinah saw such immense heat. Suddenly a strong man came holding a naked sword in his hand .He was appearing to be the leader of the nation. The man came inside the central yard of Masjid-e-Nabawi and said to the sun, "O sun! Whom are you showing your anger? Is Umar not doing justice on earth or he is not fulfilling his duty honestly."

History is a witness as soon as he uttered those sentences weather turned cool and came to its normal level. The man was the second caliph of Islam Hadhrat Umar (Radhi Allaho anho), who is the symbol of justice and peace in the history of Islam.

He was the one for whom the Holy Prophet (Sall Allaho alaihe wasallam) prayed for and said, "May Allah bestow Islam with one Umar among two, either Umar Bin Hisham (Abu Jahl, father of the ignorant) or Umar Bin Khattab."

When Hadhrat Umar (Radhi Allaho anho) embraced Islam, he empowered it. Just after reciting Kalima, the first sentence he uttered was: "Are we not at the true path?"

"Yes, off course, we are," replied the Holy Prophet (Sall Allaho alaihe wasallam).

"So why don't we offer prayer in the Ka'aba?" he said. From that day the Muslims started to offer prayers in the holy Ka'aba openly.

Because of this the Holy Prophet (Sall Allaho alaihe wasallam) awarded him the title of "Farooque"(one who distinguishes between right and wrong).

The Holy prophet (Sall Allaho alaihe wasallam) said for him, "If there were any prophet after me he would be Umer". At one place He said, "I have four ministers: two on earth, Abu Baker (Radhi Allaho anho) and Umar (Radhi Allaho anho); two in the heavens, Jibreel and Mekaeel (Alaihis Salaam)."

In all the battles of Islam, he played a leading role and remained nearer to the Holy prophet (Sall Allaho alaihe wasallam). Even after the Holy Prophet (Sall Allaho alaihe wasallam), he was in the selection committee who selected Hadhrat Bakr (Radhi Allaho anho) as the caliph.

When Hadhrat Abu Bakr was ill, he assigned the name of Hazrat Umar (Radhi Allaho anho) as the second caliph of Islam. Someone said to Hazrat Abu Bakr, "You have assigned Hadhrat Umar (who is very strict), what will you answer to your Allah when He asks you about the strict leader of Muslims". "I will say that I have assigned a person, who is the best for this job," Hadhrat Abu Bakr (Radhi Allaho anho) said in reply.

Hadhrat Umar (Radhi Allaho anho) proved this statement with his act. He enlarged the map of Islamic world by conquering different states.

While conquering Bait-ul-Muqaddas, one of the Christian scholars said to the Muslim general, "If your caliph come to us, we will give him the keys of Bait-ul-muqaddas." At that time the Muslim Army was in a very strong condition, they could defeat them easily. But the Muslim general wrote a letter to Hadhrat Umar (Radhi Allaho anho) and told him the situation. Hadhrat Umar (Radhi Allaho anho) said, "If the bloodshed of humanity is stopped by me then I will do so." He left Madinah and went to Bait-ul-muqaddas for that purpose.

He was very strict in all the religious matters. All the people had a great fear of him. Even Satan used to remain 40 feet away from him. He had a great fear of Allah. He used to say, "I am very afraid to be accountable in front of Allah. I swear if a dog is died by hunger at the bank of Farat, Umar will be considered accountable for it in front of Allah. In the night, he used to disguise himself to know about the condition of people.

Once he was performing this duty in the night suddenly he saw an Arab villager, who was camped outside Madinah. His wife was pregnant and was about to deliver the child. Hazrat Umar (Radhi Allaho anho) met him and asked the situation. He told Hadhrat Umar what was going on with him in that lonely place.

Hadhrat Umar (Radhi Allaho anho) went to his home at once and brought his wife Umm-e-Kulsoom for the service of that pregnant woman. While his wife was performing the duty to get a swift delivery of the child possible, the traveller started to condemn Hadhrat Umar (Radhi Allaho anho) that he was famous for his responsibility and duty for his people but he was in trouble and Umar was not here. Hadhrat Umar (Radhi Allaho anho) said nothing to him in reply. When the wife of the villager was treated properly and delivered the child, the wife of Hadhrat Umar called and said to him, "O leader of Muslims (Ameer-ul-Momineen), give him the glad tiding of a son. Let's go, she is well now." Upon hearing that, the villager got embarrassed and begged a pardon from him.

In short, his whole life gives us a lesson to help others and serve them regardless of their caste, creed or colour. His life gives us the lesson of justice, fraternity, peace and service to mankind. May Allah help all of us to follow the teachings of Hazrat Umar (Radhi Allaho anho) and get the way of success!
