A scientist had previously been a sailor. Hewas very aware that ships were addressed as"she" and "her". He often wondered whatgender computers should be addressed as. Toanswer that question, he set up two groupsof computer experts.The first group was composed of women, andthe second of men. Each group was asked torecommend whether computers should bereferred to in the feminine gender, or themasculine gender. They were asked to givefour reasons for their recommendations.The group of women reported that computersshould be referred to in the masculine gender because: In order to gettheirattention you have to turn them on.The have a lot of data, but are stillclueless. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half thetime theyare the problem themselves.As soon as you commit to one, you realizethat if you had waited a little longer youcould have had a better model.The men, on the other hand, concluded thatcomputers should be referred to in thefeminine gender because: No one but theCreator understands their internal logic.The native language they use to communicatewith other computers is incomprehensible toeveryone else.Even your smallest mistakes are stored inlong-term memory for later retrieval.As soon as you make a commitment to one, youfind yourself spending half of your paycheckon accessories for it
