Different transport bodies have threatened that the transporters, especially those possessing vehicles running on petrol, will lodge strong protest if the government did not withdraw the recent increase in gasoline prices. In a statement, Chairman Karachi Transport Federation, Saleem Khan Bangash, and other office-bearers strongly criticised the recent raise in petrol prices, saying that the common man and the transporters will directly be affected by the said move. They said that all the transporters are fed up with the present policies of the government and now they have agreed to observe wheel jam strike if the government did not withdraw its recent decision. Chairman Ittehad-e-All-Karachi Transporters and Workers Sindh, Muhammad Ashraf Bangalori, and other leaders said that despite the worldwide decrease in petrol prices, the government carried out 25 per cent increase in the petrol prices. They said that owners of vehicles running on petrol, who were already facing lots of problems these days, be forced to wind up their businesses if the government retained the recent raise in gasoline prices. They said that raising transport fares is not the solution to this problem and it will aggravate the problems of the common people. The government should reconsider its decision otherwise all the transport bodies will be forced to lodge a joint protest campaign. Meanwhile, President Mehmood Hamid and General Secretary Raja Naseer Asad of All Pakistan Organisation of Small Traders and Cottage Industries threatened that the traders will observe a token hunger strike throughout the country on July 21 and will announce nation-wide strike at All Pakistan Taajir Convention, scheduled to be held at Multan on July 31. Secretary General Khawaja Muhammad Awan and other leaders of People’s Labour Bureau, while criticising the government on increasing the petrol prices, termed it another ‘anti people’ act which had deprived masses of their right to live. The office-bearers of All Pakistan Clerks Association, while condemning the raise in petrol prices, have demanded immediate resignation of Finance Minister Sartaj Aziz. |
