Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari has decided to intervene and resolve disputes and differences emerging among coalition partners in the Sindh government over the running of the provincial government. Officials said that the PPP co-chairman has directed Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah to convene a special cabinet meeting on Thursday. Zardari wants to personally meet with cabinet members from both the PPP and the coalition parties, and speak about apprehensions, reservations and complaints emanating from both sides. The special cabinet meeting would be held at the CM House and provincial ministers would brief Zardari about the performances of their departments and functioning since the government took over. The PPP co-chairman will return from Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. During his stay in the city, he would hold meetings with the PPP leadership and review the performance of the party. Officials said that the Sindh chief minister held a special cabinet meeting on Tuesday at the CM House to inform the ministers of Zardari’s impending plan. The CM also asked the ministers to prepare a report about the performance of their respective departments. The meeting also reviewed the political and economic situation of the province, as well as administrative measures taken to provide relief to people during the last two months. Ministers belonging to the coalition partners told Shah that they wanted the PPP chief to recognize the problems being faced in running the affairs of their departments. Officials also claimed that Shah told the cabinet ministers that proposals regarding the imminent budget would be welcome in the meeting with Zardari. Officials said that the cabinet meeting held on Tuesday was not convened unexpectedly and that the meeting had been scheduled in the CM’s engagements for the day. Some provincial ministers maintained, however, that it was an unscheduled meeting, and that they had to cancel their official engagements to attend it. Meanwhile, the electricity crisis was discussed in detail during an urgent meeting of the Sindh Cabinet under the chair of the CM. The meeting was of the opinion that their was extreme unrest in the province especially Karachi because of the electricity crisis, and expressed concern over reports that in some areas of Karachi their had been no electricity for over 14 hours. The cabinet also discussed alternative energy options available to the government. The water issue also came under discussion and the Sindh Irrigation minister apprised the cabinet about the water shortage. He said that the province is heading towards a better situation. |
