The Zoroastrian community in Karachi marked the New Year on Wednesday (August 21), also known as Nauroze. Families across the city visited the Agiary (fire temple) where a thanksgiving prayer (Jashan) was offered followed by a feast at the Beach Luxury Hotel organised by Byram Dinshawji Avari. Some 1,200 Parsis attended the feast this year, informed Avari while talking to The News. “Almost all the members from the community, whether young or old, were part of the celebration. The occasion is an opportunity for the Parsis to come together and raise funds for the poor. The charity collected is usually given to public hospitals and the Parsi General Hospital,” said Avari. According to the Zoroastrian calendar, Nauroze is celebrated twice, once on March 21 to mark the start of the spring season and the second Nawroz in July or August (depending on the variations of the Zoroastrian calendar). The second Nauroze is celebrated after the last day of the year, Pateti, which comes after a period of ten days remembering the dead. During the 10-day run-up to the Parsi New Year, Parsis remember their departed family members, the souls of whom they believe, visit them during the 10-day period. The New Year celebrations also include customs such as wearing new clothes and exchanging sweets among friends and relatives. |
